Doors Mysteriously Open and Shut
The mirror's light seemed dark. It called for a closer look. It tugged on the subconscious until the trap sprung. Its doors opened and shut.
Devin shivered. He heard the drips from the ancient stones in the darkness ahead and little else. But, the hair stiffened on the back of his neck. Nearby his quarry hid. He pulled out the arrow from his quiver with an emerald tip.
Bellamy cleared his throat. He dimmed the light conjured around his hand when he saw Devin nock the arrow on his bow.
The way forward opened into a wide cube. A platform to the right held a single full-length mirror. They found no other exits from the room and no beast. Still, Devin kept his bow string pulled tight.
The trail had led them through the forest and into long-forgotten ruins. The final resting place of a once important warrior or king lost to time. A sarcophagus tossed to the side, with bones spilled on the floor, left the impression of a looted tomb. No treasures adorned the walls or explained the tomb’s existence.
The last thing to investigate was the mirror. Its presence seemed prominent yet unusual. Bellamy's light did not reflect in the mirror.
"It may be a portal." He cautioned. The pair turned to approach the mirror.
Devin put his hand up to stop Bellamy. The platform the mirror rested upon had a series of nodes that would depress with the slightest pressure.
"Watch out for those nodes on the floor. Step between them." Devin did not release his grip on that arrow.
As they approached, the mirror’s golden frame remained the only thing that reflected light. Still, something hung suspended in the glass. The pair had to look closer. It urged them. Closer. For a second, they saw two yellow eyes in the mirror.
Devin spun around, and his arrow launched toward the eyes, but it disappeared into the darkness. Bellamy was gone. Nothing was behind him, not the mirror, not even the room.
Belamy knelt on the cold floor in a new space. The platform was gone. Devin was gone. He knew. The mirror snared them.
The scales clattered over the length of the dragon as it revealed itself on the far side of the mirror.
"Ah, new pets."
