Etonia City Watch

My 1st Wildlands one-shot is published! Check Out Mystery of Thorngage Manor

Written by George Sanders

Schedules, patrols. Shifts, watches. Each gate covered, every wagon documented. Ships come and go, but the names that go ashore are all recorded. Taxes collected for those coming to trade or new to the city. All those duties fell to the City Watch.

Training on Tuesday evenings and Saturday mornings. Inventory and quartermaster request due by Wednesday evening. It required consistent performance and commitment.

Captain of the Guard

That is Captain Aryo. His experience leading elite archery units in the Rose War prepared him to lead and direct. He became the captain of the guard this Spring after the previous captain retired.

Lieutenants

The commanders of a squad of five guards. They may lead a squad stationed at the three gates, patrol on the city wall, operate the dock's port of entry, or guard the town hall. Some squads are assigned patrol routes and others may be assigned to a shift guarding a building like the town hall. Of the six lieutenants, four are also veterans of the Rose War. On a rotating weekly schedule one lieutenant covers the night shift, one covers the days of rest, three assigned to the port, gates and wall during the busiest daytime hours, with the last one given downtime.

Guardsman

After ten years of being in Etonia many of the guardmen that were also veterans of the Rose War have retired or moved on to other roles. They were talented marksmen and trained in advanced combat tactics. Those that remain in the area around Etonia could be considered a reserve force and would be about forty strong.

New guards are trained in the combat technics of the Southern armies as well as the more mundane tasks required of a city guard. The guards get private housing and access to city services along with a stipend. The well-trained, well-funded force has a reputation of efficiency and is not known to take bribes.

Recruitment

All guards volunteer for the position and even as a professional force with little recent conflict there is a constant need to recruit new guards. The grind of the schedule and dealing with the public puts a cap of three to five years of service for most guards. The officers are in charge of recruitment as well as their usual duties so they try to wrap it into the activies they need to perform.

  • The main recruitment office is at the East Gate where the lieutenant on duty is usually stationed.
  • The training days are open to all members of the community to build a pool of prespective guards. Regular contests and events are held to attract new prospects.
  • Heralds and flyers are used to announce recruitment drives once a year or twice at the most.

I wonder how the squads are formed, if they are expected to be long known groups or if you just get who is assigned with you. Sounds grueling, but being a town guard has never been too glamorous has it? Great Article :)

Thanks for reading! Squads do serve most of their time together, but a few have transferred for special posts or expeditionary forces. I'll link this article to the other parts of the Etonia Guard when the challenge period is done.

Nice and to the point. I really need to take notes from articles like this. Great read too, I really like the opening. It reads well and catches you.

Thanks. Most of my articles are flash fiction but it is fun during Summer Camp to just get the details down. Often by that time there are so many things that need linked together the article feels like it writes itself.
