Heralds Guild

My 1st Wildlands one-shot is published! Check Out Mystery of Thorngage Manor

Written by George Sanders

Tables scraped and rumbled across the wood floor. Chairs were handed from one person to the next. Ten rows of seven or eight chairs were quickly set up. The loud rumble of voices continued until the guildmaster called above the crowd.   "Take your seats. Let's go. Everyone, take your seats." After a few more calls, the room quieted down. There weren't enough chairs for everyone in the room, so several heralds gathered around the sides and in the back, behind the chairs.   Those gathering included performers too. Anyone that wanted to sing, dance, recite stories, or play music in taverns or public spaces in Etonia had to register with the Herald's Guild. The crowd packed into the composing room of the guild hall represented barely half of the membership. There were two monthly meeting times to accommodate work schedules, which was not uncommon.   "You all know what's coming. It's busy season!" As many groans as cheers responded to the guildmaster's declaration.   Busy season was fish and biscuit season. You read that right. It was soon time for the annual Fish and Biscuit Rally. Taverns were open late into the evening. Performances were requested at double or triple their regular rate. Plus, every performer wanted a slot on the stage at the fairgrounds.   Heralds had two daily routes instead of one. Half of them would cover the routes, and the other half would be on diplomatic duty, welcoming travelers coming into the city for the Rally. The guildmaster repeated the expectations and requirements of each job as they did every year. It was time to pay attention when he talked about the contest.   "One of you might welcome the next Rally Performer of the Year at the gates, or you will be that person. Prizes this year not only include free meals at the Red Stirge and unlimited drinks Tuesdays at the Laughing Crab but also a magic lute recovered from Thorngage Manor!"   The entire room erupted with gasps and murmurs. The guildmaster had to call out three times to get the room under control.   "I know it's last minute. Remember, you need to cover at least ten shifts or routes each week before qualifying for prizes."   The shift sheets hung on the walls around the room. Those standing by the wall spun around to claim their shifts. A wave of performers and heralds moved to the walls to sign up for their shifts too.

Geetings Reader! Let's explore a little of the daily life in Etonia. My goal this month is to complete thirty 300-500 word peeks into key moments that put the city's factions, backgrounds, and locations of interest on display. Read each story on my World Ember challenge page and see you on the streets of Etonia!
