Cassandra
Cassandra packed her small bag. She was glad they weren’t to be one of the units remaining behind on Golden Reef. That honor, if one could call it an honor, fell to the 15th regiment of grunts, and several support companies from other divisions and regiments to remain behind as a garrison force.
Cassandra didn’t know all the details, it didn’t seem anyone did, at least not anyone she knew that was willing t say anything, but she knew that they had found something. One of the ‘Cave’ frigates had returned less than twelve hours ago from out of system, and than order came in that the Star Carrier class Super Carrier starship was bugging out of system.
There were rumors that the frigates had been scouting the nearby star systems, and found something. Cassandra didn’t know what they found, but whatever it was, she didn’t want to miss it. She had had enough of garrison duty on Golden Reef.
The small compound from which the 1st Company, of the 3rd Battalion of 13th Regiment of the 10th legion had called home for the last two months. More than two hundred members of the company went about their assigned duties as the whole company prepared to board the waiting shuttles, and return to the ‘Cave’.
“We’re going to the some place called Fornsogtuna,” Edmund confirmed to Cassandra.
“You sure?” Cassnadra asked him. She had never heard of the place.
Edmund nodded. “Just spoke Thane Vault, who just came out of a meeting with High Thane Dawnburst. Some old Bolgar world which has largely been abandoned for centuries.”
“What can we expect?” Cassandra asked.
“The frigate captured a small scout vessel before it report back,” Edmund told her, and than began to pack his own gear. “Fucking horror show in it, but records showed a system that it made non stop stops at, and the crew confirmed it as a base of some sort.”
Cassandra snorted. “A base in the of the rebels?” he asked but continued before Edmund could reply. “What do you mean horror show?”
Edmund’s face twisted. “They kept slaves,” he said and fell silent for a moment. “I don’t mean thralls, I mean real slaves, and they were in rough shape. The things that were done to them… well fuck, from what I heard, I wouldn’t wish that shit on anyone.”
Cassandra was silent for a moment, and let out a long breath. She wasn’t surprised. The Bolgar’s might be paying them their wage, but they were also savages. Everyone knew that, and the Furse had been fighting them for thousands of years, long before the formation of the Old Ruins when that was once a filled section of space populated by several Furse kingdoms, and even a Bolgar kingdom.
“Fuck do I hate dealing with the Bolgars,” Cassandra finally said. “I hate slavers more though. If we need to protect the so-called king of Barta, at least we get to kill some slavers while were at it.”
