Hakon
Hakon boarded the shuttle that would take him, Frea, and the others back to the ‘Axetooth’. The starships hadn’t landed on the surface of Jom this time, and the crews rotated for leave. Now it was over and the 113th Legion were heading for the Old Ruins of Furse Space.
The 113th legion took a new contract with the System-lord of Calraid to patrol, and escort several trading vessel. The star system thrived on trade more than any other in Furse space, and it was common for them to hire the Jom for such easy, but high paying contracts.
The Old Ruins was a lawless section of space, filled with old ruined worlds which were once part of the Furse Empire before the Skoll invaded, and destroyed all in their path. Even after the Skoll had been defeated it had taken a thousand years of darkness to free the Old Ruins of the last Skoll. Now it was filled with pirates, raiders, and outlaws, and even those had thinned in recent years.
The Furse, and Bolgar who surrounded the Old Ruins had slowly begun to re settle those old worlds, but they were always a target, as much as starships traveling through. Lords of all kind, mostly the Furse, made their way through the Old Ruins, and acted as much pirate as the outlaws, only they could outnumber almost anything else. In times past, kings of the various furse kingdoms that rose after the fall of the Furse empire would launch great campaigns in the old ruins to raid, or plunder the already ruined worlds, or hit those worlds on the other side of the old ruins, which were largely made up Bolgars.
Myth, legend, and great stories surrounded the Old Ruins since it’s creation thousands of years ago, but now it was little more than a waste, and Hakon knew that he, and the other grunts would mostly be keeping their time filled with endless drills, and boredom. They might come across the odd freighter, transport or even outlaw warship that would have to be boarded, but most vessels would just run from them, and the 113th would only be able to get so far from those starships it were meant to escort.
“Extra, ten thousand just at end of contract,” Frea said from beside Hakon. “Not a bad deal for a quiet ferry ride through the Old Ruins.”
Hakon grunted. “It will be quiet, but I could use some quiet.”
Frea gave him a small shove from their seats on the shuttle. “The great ‘Tomb’ seeks peace?” she asked with mocked shock. “Next thing you know you will want to leave all the glory of the Jom behind, and start a family.”
Hakon nodded. “Family, and reclaim my home,” he said firmly, without the playful tone in his voice, before he looked at Frea, and smiled. “There will be time for struggles, but for now, I can do with getting us safely through our time with the Jom, and than planning our next moves?”
Frea let out her own grunt. “Our next moves,: she said to herself. “Seems like our next move is to get onto the ‘Axetooth’, and survive the boredon, and rake in the credits while we do it looking so good.”
